Cinema of Stuff Presents ....The Curse of Dracular / Butterflies !

I thought today I'd show a double bill of a couple of animated shorts that popped up on my Youtube!

First up is The Curse of Dracular....

From Director, Jack Paterson....

"Director Statement

The Curse of Dracular is a claymation film I produced for my final year of University, based on a story my Dad wrote when he was a child (around nine years old). He discovered it a few years ago after finding that his mum had kept a collection of his old schoolwork. Upon reading it, it becomes clear that the story was heavily inspired by the classic Hammer Horror films he would catch late at night as a child. We both found his story hilarious, and I thought it would be the perfect basis for a short film.

I should note that one detail I found particularly funny was the fact he had misspelled the name Dracula as "Dracular", hence the title.

Although the film is comical, it comes from a very personal place as my Dad has been a continuous inspiration to me for as long as I can remember, and I credit a lot of my love of film and animation to him. Thus, this film is in large part a tribute to him. Claymation is also our favourite form of animation, and some of my oldest memories were us sculpting various characters and creatures out of Play-Doh and Plasticine.

This claymation film is the culmination of months of work, and was filmed primarily in my dining room. Being a one-man crew, the production of this film has been quite the journey, so I'm very excited to finally share it with the world.

So sit back, and enter the deadly domain of the dastardly Count Dracular!"

Next up, we have Butterflies..

From Youtube....

"The short stop-motion animation Butterflies, directed by Isabel Peppard, weaves a haunting tale of a young artist named Claire (voiced by Rachel Griffiths), who struggles to sustain herself by selling her art on the street. Her fortunes seem to change when a businessman, Dalton Hearst (voiced by Nicholas Hope), recognizes her talent and offers her a paid position. However, what initially appears to be a golden opportunity soon threatens to suffocate her creativity.

Peppard masterfully blends Claire’s vivid childhood memories with her present-day struggles, crafting a gothic fairytale within a world that is both dark and intricately detailed.

Butterflies stands out with its distinctive, tactile aesthetic, achieved through highly sculptural sets constructed from a variety of materials such as wood, latex, fiberglass, resin, and plaster.

The film’s puppets, made from hyper-realistic silicone, feature meticulously airbrushed skin tones, lifelike eyeballs, and individually implanted hairs, creating an unsettlingly real yet surreal experience. The visual style draws inspiration from visceral horror, Victorian industrial architecture, and oriental art and design, resulting in a richly atmospheric and immersive world.

The film's core team included Isabel Peppard, Warwick Burton, and Beau White. Isabel and Warwick co-wrote the story, with Warwick producing the film. Isabel, in addition to her directorial and cinematographic roles, oversaw set construction, puppet creation, and animation. Beau White collaborated closely with Isabel during pre-production, focusing on the intricate building of sets and characters. Jon Billington, the director of photography, played a crucial role in shaping the lighting to reflect the film's different worlds, while Nick Hilligoss, the key animator, made significant contributions during post-production, helping to bring the film's chilling narrative to life. Music was composed by Elliott Wheeler, the multi award winning Australian film composer. The sound designer was Michael McMenomy."

Appleseed Booklet - Free with Super Play magazine

Another random-box-find set of scans today...this time it's a booklet about Masamune Shirow's manga Appleseed  that came free with an issue of Super Play Magazine, probably to promote the Super Nintendo game based on the series...

Although it looks like bits of it haven't been scanned in properly, any missing words or cut-off pictures were absent in the original book. It seems they just copied it from another source and didn't worry about the missing bits...Still, it's a cool wee random thing to have!

Anyway, here it is for posterity....

The Real Ghostbusters - Choose Your Own Adventure (Free With Trio Biscuits)

Trio biscuits were named as such due to three amazing types of food-stuff being smooshed together...chocolate, toffee and a biscuit-base! The topic of today's post was a similar melding together of three awesome things...and although it doesn't work out being quite as great as Trio biscuits, the fact it was free meant it was still pretty decent...

The trio of stuffs that make up this crazy other thing, are all things I loved towards the end of Primary school...the aforementioned biscuits, The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and choose-your-own adventure style role playing books!

For some sort of promo-campaign, the free comic you can read below was the result of this particular smoosh-up, and as I've already said, whilst it's a bit rubbish and not very substantial, it was still a pretty cool thing to get as a little extra with your snacks!

Now, remember not to read this straight through or it won't make much sense...go to whatever page your choices direct you to interact and follow the story!

Although I've only got the above comic, there were another five to collect, as can be seen in the pic below. I've never ever seen any of these other ones....not even the covers, until I found this pic online whilst putting this post together....so if anybody knows if scans exist of these somewhere online, gimme a shout as I'd love to read them all!

I used to read the actual Real Ghostbusters comic too, but I've probably got enough to say about that, the toys and the cartoon for another blog post somewhere down the line, so yeah.....keep an eye out for that sometime this century!

Oh, and I just discovered whilst looking at the Trio Wiki-page that they've apparently brought Trio biscuits back after 13 years! So have a look for those in the shops too, if you want to reintroduce your tastebuds to them or have never sampled them before!

Rock Lords Comic (Free With Toys)

Back in the eighties, the Transformers weren't the only transforming toys you could get your hands on...there was a whole heap of clones and competing brands trying to get you to part with your pocket money and buy them instead of saving up for Optimus Prime

Transformers biggest rivals were the Gobots , who actually came out as toys before Transformers properly existed (Transformers were created from merged Japanese toy-lines with different names)! They also had their own cartoon  (also before the Transformers cartoon) and later a couple of movies...

It was after the release of the movie Gobots - Battle of the Rock Lords, that a spin-off set of toys known as Rock Lords appeared! Despite never owning any Gobots, something about the fact they were rocks instead of cars made me want to pick up some Rock Lords, and so my brother and I got a few each!

The few that I got (and still have in my flat somewhere) were Boulder (leader of the good rocks), and Sticks 'n' Stones and Slimestone, two evil rocks! They were a lot simpler to transform than quite a lot of the Transformers, but still came with that worry that you'd snap a bit off if you tried to transform them wrongly!

Along with each toy, you got a free mini-comic...and it is one of these comics that is the real purpose of this post, as I just found it hidden away in one of the many boxes from my cupboards I'm currently working my way through sorting out! Here in all it's splendor then, is said comic...

Rock Lords only made it to three series of toys before being cancelled, but I reckon they should bring them back, along with the Gobots,  in the next Transformers movie...just to shake things up a bit!

Anyhoo, this wasn't the only comic-type thing I found in the box, so check back soon for some more random scan-type posts!

Update & Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Another month passed all ready! Where the heck is time going these days? I'm a bit busy getting stuff ready for something pretty major, so haven't had as much time as I'd like to be posting on the blog...but it's all going to be  very exciting! Well, for me anyway...and hopefully for a few of you at least! All very mysterious I know, but more news will be coming about this soon, so keep yir eyes peeled!

Zombie Shamrock by SheWhoStamps on Etsy

The much delayed end of the Gruesome Games list is being held off until October now because of all this though, where I'm planning to change it up a bit and just have one game a day after the initial catch-up...which should mean I actually have time to get through them and we won't be left with 20 still to do next year! This also frees me up to concentrate on some other new things I've been wanting to stick on the blog, so after the next month or so, the posts should be more frequent and a little more varied...In the meantime, Happy St. Patrick's Day! And have another lazy cartoon post filled with gold and leprechauns!

By The Power Of Grayskull !

"In today's story, Deadpan Flook discovered that some fans have decided to be awesome and create a beat-em-up based on Masters Of The Universe! Many actual companies have tried to create games based on He-Man before, but they have all failed to capture the feeling of the original show...Well now we all fail sometimes, but we should never be afraid to try again. And we should always keep believing in ourselves. As the old saying goes 'if at first you don't succeed, try try again.' Until later, bye."

You can get the playable demo here.......and read more about how it came to be here!

And to celebrate, let's listen to the He-Man single by Masters Of  The Universe!

This 1936 Fleischer cartoon features a fly's nightmare holiday destination, run by a spider who could do with a throat lozenge!

Bambi Meets Godzilla

Marv Newland's 1969 epic was released alongside Godzilla 1985 in cinemas and VHS, and tells the story of what happened when two of cinemas biggest stars had a chance meeting...

The Flintstones Meet Rockula & Frankenstone

When Halloween Was Forever!

The Real Ghostbusters have to deal with Samhain wanting Halloween to last forever in this 1986 cartoon....It would be handy! I might actually get the Gruesome Games list finished! ;-)

Out Of The Inkwell - Trip To Mars (Max Fleischer, 1924)...Plus a little nod to Rotoscoping!

Decided it was time for another weird Out Of The Inkwell cartoon...In this one, Koko the Clown goes on an unwanted trip to mars!

The Out of the Inkwell series came about as a result of Max Fleisher's invention, the Rotoscope...a projector and easel combination that allows an artist to draw on top of live action to get more realistic results. Max's brother Dave Fleischer was working as a clown on Coney Island, so he became the inspiration and original model for what was to become Koko the Clown!

Rotoscoping as a technique has been used in animation, film and videogames ever since Fleischer's first experiments with it in 1915, and you can see examples in lots of titles, like Snow White, Star Wars, A-Ha's Take On Me video, He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe and the original Prince Of Persia game..to name but a few!

Speaking of Prince Of Persia, it's quite odd seeing Jordan Mechner's brother acting out the animations for it in this video he posted on Youtube, because the moves are so recognisable to anyone familiar with the game...

Anyway, it's a pretty cool technique, and I reckon Max Fleischer uses it best, so expect to see more of his cartoons on here again sometime!

THE DINOSAUR AND THE MISSING LINK

King Kong's ancestor comes a cropper in Willis H O'Brien's 1915 animation....

Out Of The Inkwell - The Ouija Board (Max Fleischer, 1920)

Was bored and decided to treat you to some animation.....Here's a nice little silent cartoon from Max Fleischer, produced for the Bray Studios in 1920.
