Cinema of Stuff Presents.....Neon Maniacs!

When I was a kid, I had a weird dream that Frankenstein's Monster lived at a dump just along the road from our house... My brother and I used to go to the dump a lot, as staying in farm cottages, there wasn't many other places to go when looking for play areas, and there was quite often some new odd thing that would appear at the dump to take a look at (like for instance, some weird wooden car frame that our local aging ex-military eccentric had decided to build, and then just randomly discard when he got bored of that project).  And we had a 'gang hut' nearby too, which was basically just the side of large tree that we had added extra foliage to to bulk it up a bit.

But after I had that Frankenstein dream, I became a bit wary of going near the dump alone for a while. The dream had freaked me out. Something about the way the monster lurched out of the bushes in the dream had really unsettled me, and it had be quite a lucid experience that made me question the reality of it for a good few weeks!

So why am I telling you about this dream?  Because not long after having it, we watched Neon Maniacs on VHS.  And the first thing that struck me about the film was that the way the maniacs stumbled around in the dark totally reminded me of the lurching Boris-brute from my dream...and has done every time I've watched it since!

Now, Neon Maniacs is not a good film.  In fact it's pretty bad.  But the weird, surreal ideas of the film are amazing!  For some reason, a whole group of crazy-assed mutants, all with their own personality and preferred tools of torture, randomly live under the Golden Gate bridge and after a random fisherman finds some giant-sized trading card style snaps of them outside the bridge, the kill him and then go on a rampage, slaying whoever else they come across for seemingly no other reason than it's just what they do!

And watching this as a ten-year-old in 1987ish, I reckon I was just the right age for weird trading-card troll beasts to make an impact, even if it meant having to endure the terrible battle-of-the-bands sequence....

I'm probably getting way ahead of myself though, as a lot of you won't have seen this and will have no idea what I'm talking about....so lets just watch the film and then I'll get back to you!

* The Main Feature! *

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you have it. the weirdness that is Neon Maniacs!  Apparently the film was stopped halfway through filming when the original makers ran out of cash, and so another company picked it up to finish it off, which might explain some of the rubbishness.  For instance, there was going to be 27 maniacs, but they were reduced to 12... and supposedly all of the maniacs were going to have more background story, and there was going to be a bigger end battle, but it all had to be cut due to the cost of special effects.

But I've always felt that this was a film that would have benifitted greatly from a sequel or two...where they could build on the odd lore.......

Why was there weird trading cards of the Neon Maniacs just lying around?  What age is Laura actually supposed to be? How long have they been under the bridge?  Why is water so deadly to them?  How did such a rag-tag bunch get together?  Were they hiding in another dimension in the back of the ambulance??

I've come up with my own ideas for a sequel, which I won't get into too much here other than to say....think how well trading card ink and water go together......

Oh, and also, on a side note, do you think that the reason the kids in Zombies Ate My Neighbors use water pistols is totally because of this movie?  I can't think of any other horror films which use water pistols to defeat the enemies!!

So yeah, it's a shame that Neon Maniacs was essentially an unfinished film, but it's even more of a shame that it didn't get the sequels it deserved!  I hope that in watching it you feel the same....

Cool and Creepy Stuff I Own - Part 4 - Monsters in the Movies (John Landis)

I picked up this book for £10 a few years back, which was about a sixth of it’s recommended retail price…and was very happy with my purchase! It’s a great book, filled with page after page of creatures from 100 years of cinema! So I thought I’d share some of those pages with you and give you a sneak peek at what’s in store for you if you manage to find it at bargain price (seems to be anywhere from £12 to £99 for the hardback copy 2nd hand online)….

Landis is mostly famous, at least in my experience, for four things....The Blues Brother movie, An American Werewolf In London, Michael Jackson's Thriller video...and for his series of bad decisions and cavalier attitude to safety and protocol that likely contributed to the deaths of Vic MorrowMyca Dinh Le (age 7) and Renee Shin-Yi Chen (age 6), who lost their lives in a helicopter accident during filming of Twilight Zone - The Movie.  The whole situation around that incident is crazy and would require a lengthy post all on it's own, but Landis did not come out of it looking at all good. Steven Spielberg allegedly ended his friendship with Landis over it, and despite being cleared of any charges regarding the deaths, he was reprimanded for breaching Child Labour laws by hiring the child actors, which resulted in stricter safety measures and enforcement of child labor laws in California....

He later went on to direct several comedies, including The Three Amigos, Trading Places, Coming To America and the not-so-great Blues Brothers sequel, and also produced a lot of stuff for TV including Masters of Horror. His latest directing venture is Superhero Kindergarten, an animated show created by Stan Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Andy Heyward....

Regardless of anything else, or how you might feel about Landis after reading about his behaviour leading to the tragedy of Twilight Zone, he certainly does know his horror movies, and this book is a great read, and filled with wonderful photos of all your favourite movies...but also a good resource for finding ones you've maybe not gotten around to watching yet!

Grab a copy for your coffee table if these pictures have tickled your fancy...or, if like me, you don't actually own a coffee table, just buy lots of copies of this book. It's big enough for several to make a very sturdy coffee table themselves!

Cinema of Stuff Presents....Hercules in the Haunted World!

Something a bit different for tonight's feature....an Italian Fantasy-Horror movie from 1961!
Hercules in the Haunted World (Italy - 'Ercole al centro della terra' UK 'Hercules at the Center of the Earth') is a sword-and-sandal film directed by Italian horror director, Mario Bava

Reg Park (British bodybuilder, previous Mr. Universe and the man who inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger to pick up weights) plays Hercules for the second of five movies in which he played the role, and a de-fanged Christopher Lee appears as the mysterious King Lico.

The film sees Hercules journey to the underworld in search of a magical stone, the only thing that can bring his lady friend Princess Deianira (Leonora Ruffo) back to her senses...

Originally releaased in Italy in 1961, it made it's way to an English dub in 1962, and an American release in 1964, although a different actor voiced Christopher Lee's Lico....

So grab some snacks, dim the lights, sit back and prepare to head to Hades with Herules and pals!

(But first, a few ads!)

When David Norliss (Roy Thinnes) disappears whilst writing a book about the supernatural, his publisher Sanford Evans (Don Porter) discovers some tapes that might give clues to his disappearance.

Originally produced by NBC as a pilot for a television series, it unfortunately never became one!

Cinema of Stuff Presents...The Evil (AKA House Of Evil) (1978)

(image courtesy of The Telltale Mind...)

They clearly had a sale on pyrotechnics when this film was made...There's a lot of flames! One of the actors apparently even got a burnt face in real life during one of the scenes ....

Directed by Gus Trikonis and starring Richard Crenna and Joanna Pettet, this is a classic haunted house movie that gets a little bit silly towards the end, but in my opinion, that just makes it even more watchable! Enjoy!

In this TV movie from 1982, a young girl starts seeing the ghost of her sister who died a year before in an accident. Strange happenings then occur throughout the family's new home. Has the dead girl returned to haunt her relatives?

I've heard good things about this one...supposedly really creepy, but I haven't had the time to watch it yet, so I'll be watching this one along with you! The cast seems great though, with folks from Duel, Poltergeist and Rosemary's Baby to name a few!

Directed by Richard Lang

Written by Ned Wynn

Starring.......

Dennis Weaver - Philip

Valerie Harper - Laura

Robin Ignico - Mary

Kristin Cumming - Jennifer

Oliver Robins - Kevin

Ruth Gordon - Bernice

Cinema Of Stuff Presents - Tombs Of The Blind Dead!

None of your fast-moving, running full pelt "28 Days Later" style zombies here! Nope, here we have freaky as hell, plodding, Knight Templar zombies! Well, more accurately, they're more like Knight Templar mummy-esque vampires or something....

This is a cult classic that I'd never seen until I watched it yesterday, but I was happy to discover it on Youtube so I could share it with all with you as part of the countdown!

Written & Directed by Amando de Ossorio,

Starring...

Lone Fleming as Betty Turner

César Burner as Roger Whelan

María Elena Arpón as Virginia White

José Thelman as Professor Pedro Candal

Rufino Inglés as Inspector Oliveira

Verónica Llimera as Nina

Cinema Of Stuff Presents...Devil Dog - The Hound Of Hell (1978)

Following on from last year's 'terrifying' killer canine movie post, Dogs, Cinema of Stuff is proud to present another movie that is sure to put the fear of the devil into you next time your pad-footed pet looks at you funny....

Made for TV in 1978, Devil Dog - The Hound of Hell is about a family who have unwittingly been chosen by a bunch of dodgy devil-worshippers to raise a Barghest-infused puppy to adulthood!

They really went all out in the special effects department, and there isn't a hint of sarcasm in that statement at all...*cough*

Directed by Curtis Harrington
Written by Stephen Karpf and Elinor Karpf
Starring.....

Cinema Of Stuff Presents....Moon of the Wolf / Scream of the Wolf

Two werewolf movies that aired as ABC Movies of the Week for your viewing pleasure this evening...

Moon of the Wolf aired in 1972, and Scream of the Wolf appeared two years later in 1974. Other than both movies having 'of the wolf' in their title, I don't think they're supposed to be connected.
