The Return Of The Gruesome Games (Part 2)

As has somewhat become a tradition of the blog, every time I tried to write this next installment of Gruesome Games, I ended up feeling terrible...the dreaded Curse of the Blog!! Nevertheless I persevered, and so here are four more games for you to consider for some fiendishly freaky fright-fest fun!

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

War Of The Monsters (PS2/PS4) :

Big giant monsters! Ever since King Kong climbed the Empire State Building and Godzilla first rose up from the sea, huge creatures have been stomping all over our on-screen cities. Naturally it wasn't long before such creatures met up to battle each other to find out who was the best, and cause even more destruction! Once video games appeared on the scene, they also didn't wait very long before giving us control over these mega-sized monsters!

This game then is similar to a few other monster beat-em-ups, but it is a very good example of the genre! There are eight characters unlocked at the start of the game, with a few more available to unlock. These characters will look fairly familiar to any fan of the aforementioned sci-fi flicks too, with a giant ape, a giant lizard, a huge robot...you get the idea! The game knows it's target audience and knows what they'll want to see!

Once you've listened to the 50's style music, watched the spinning newspapers of the intro and picked your favourite monster, you can play against a friend in fully 3D environments, smashing buildings, picking up cars or sharp pointy pieces of metal to throw at them, and using your characters unique abilities (radioactive breath, for example) to defeat the other player. You can also add an extra couple of fighters, although sadly these can only be computer controlled. If you can't find anybody else to play with, there is a fairly decent solo mode too, with the added feaature of slightly smaller monsters to battle in between the big fights!

The environments are pretty cool, often hiding little discoverable easter eggs such as extra weapons to use, and the way the buildings fall apart and add more things to lob at your opponent is pretty cool. There are apparently also a few mini-games to unlock, but I've never managed to unlock any of these yet, so can't really comment on those.

It all makes for a pretty enjoyable, suitably sci-fi, beast-filled brawler that's a bit of a hidden gem on Playstation 2. It took me a while to find a copy, but Im really glad I did, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a slightly unusual addition to their collection of fighting games!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monster Madness - Battle For Suburbia (Xbox 360 / PC) :

I stumbled upon this game in a charity shop a while back, and was amazed I'd never heard of it before. I thought I knew about most of the 360's horror-themed titles, but this one had totally escaped my attention, maybe because it was quite an early release on the system....

I'm certainly glad I picked it up though, as what I found was another hidden gem of a game, that almost feels like a 3D version of my old favourite, Zombies Ate My Neighbors! Almost.....

You play as one of four teenage characters, who are having to deal with a zombie outbreak that seems to have happened at the worst possible time for one in particular. Zack, the nerd, was about to tell Carrie, the goth, exactly how he felt about her just as his skater friend Andy turned up, swiftly followed by Jennifer the cheerleader and the zombie horde!

Starting in Zack's house, you'll need to scour the environment for weapons and pickups to use against these icky ex-humans, and you'll also other pieces of metal and materials that can be used to later to construct more powerful weapons to keep them at bay. A boss zombie appears, and once you defeat him you can escape the house to the city and a whole host of other environments as you try to stop these undead fiends from ruining your night!

It soon becomes apparent however, that its not just zombies! There are all sorts of messed up monsters to battle....Bigfoot, Zombie Dogs, Werewolves...even Evil Clowns! Each new monster is introduced by a short cut-scene, which is a nice touch, and from what I've played so far new enemies pop up very frequently which keeps things interesting!

There's a fair dose of humour involved in the game too...it doesn't take itself too seriously at all, and this is what gives it that B-movie mocking, light hearted feeling thats similar to Zombies Ate My Neighbors. The weapons also harken back to that classic, with you using all sorts of weird implements to bash in the baddies heads! It does add a few tricks of its own too though, with a selection of vehicles to control such as a boat to battle zombie pirates, or a hot-rod style buggy thing to traverse the roads...

Sadly though, the game has a few issues, chief of which is the camera. It quite often picks a weird angle to show you, and although it can be swapped between a close up view, or one that gives a slightly more top-down look to the game, it would be better if it gave you full control over it instead of it being semi-fixed. The controls can sometimes feel a bit janky too, and sometimes the gameplay does some weird things, and jumping around the levels can be frustrating.

So a gem, but a flawed one then! Interestingly, there's apparently an updated version for PS3 that fixes some of these issues called Monster Madness - Grave Danger, so I'll need to see if I can find that one! I can still recommend this one though...despite it's flaws it is the closest thing to a ZAMN sequel that I've seen, and was a very pleasant surprise! Pick it up if you can!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blair Witch (Xbox One / PC) :

Blair Witch is another one of those games that I really don't want to talk about too much...I just want to recommend it to you so you go and experience it for yourself! I feel the less you know about it going in, the better the experience will be...

I can tell you the basic details though. Two years after the events of the original film, a young boy has gone missing in Black Hills Forest. Ellis Lynch, the character you play, is an ex policman and military veteran who decides to put his training to good use and go help the local police force to track down the kid. With him he takes his faithful dog, Bullet, and can use his canine chum to access areas that would otherwise be inacessible. Bullet also becomes really handy when things get a bit darker or foggier at night, finding paths and ways through the forest....so you'll be wanting to keep him on your good side by occasionally playing with him or giving him treats when he does well.

As you search through the creepy forest environment you'll discover various clues and items, the most notable of which is a camera. I mean, of course....you cant have a Blair Witch game without a camera right? Needless to say this also becomes a very handy thing to have around...

Like previous Bloober Team games, this first person horror will have you jumping in fright on more than a few occasions, and it does a great job of capturing the feeling of being lost in a forest at night, before it ramps things up into the suitably weird experiences of being around the Blair Witch. But maybe I'm saying too much...

It's not a flawless game, but it's certainly suitably scary and worth a playthrough, especially at this time of year! Just be prepared to have your mind warped as you try to wander the woods.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scary Monsters (Commodore 64) :

In true horror movie style, American football hero Harry Johns and his girlfriend Conny have found themselves stuck on an island near some spooky old mansions. These mansions are owned by a mad scientist called Dr. Graves, who has been pottering around in the corspe filled places that he shares his name with, and conjuring up monsters with which he plans to take over the world!

It's up to Harry to wander around the island, enter these mansions and find the special weapons required to take down the six main monsters who are also lying sleeping in some of these cursed buildings. He'll need a gun to defeat the werewolf, a hammer and stake for the vampire...you get the idea! Trying to put a stop to Harry's plan are all the lesser monsters under the control of Dr. Graves. Touching any of these fiends will see you bounced around the screen, your health diminishing as you do so. Luckily Harry has somehow managed to power himself up with some sort of magical energy and can fire bolts from his hands to kill the beasties! Bizarrely, they also seem to be a bit spooked themselves, as pressing down on the joystick while in a building sees you giving the baddies a scare by waving your hands around in a spooky fashion. It's all a bit odd...

I had high hopes for this one after reading the premise and seeing the screenshots, but unfortunately the game is a mess. Trying to navigate the map screen I immediately came up against an invisible wall that stopped me going in one of the directions. Entering the first mansion I couldn't find anything but enemies, but had no idea how to leave the building again. And so I spent my time endlessly getting bounced around the screen before dying 3 times and getting a game over screen. Oh, I should say that was actually my second attempt as well, as the first time I tried to play the game self-aborted to the title screen from the map.

A real shame then, but although this game looks lovely and has pretty good presentation, I can't recommend it at all, as it is utter, utter poop!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow! Yikes! Tomorrow is Halloween!

Hopefully I'll be able to get a few posts done for the Grand Finale! There will definitely be the second part of the Wendigo stuff, and hopefully another comic strip and some more stuff to watch too! I'll see you here for all the Halloween hilarities anyway! Right now though, go check out what the other folks taking part in the Countdown have been doing by clicking the badge below to be zapped as if by magic to the Countdown hub!

Random Retro - Monster Hunter (Playstation 2)

I've had the Playstation 2 version of Monster Hunter for years, but I was told by a friend not long after I picked it up that it was pointless playing it offline, as the whole point of it was online play. Quests wouldn't pay as much offline, and tackling the bigger monsters would be far too tricky alone , so it would be a lost cause and I should probably avoid it..

And so Monster Hunter was stuck on the shelf after a very quick play to make sure my copy loaded at least, and was forgotten about for several years.....

2018 happens, and everybody is going crazy for Monster Hunter World, and as I've yet to get a machine capable of playing this new entry in the franchise, I decided to hunt out my copy of the original and give it another look to see how it plays offline. Just a quick ten minutes or so to see how it's aged, I think to myself....

Two hours later, I find myself struggling to switch off a game that has quickly become a favourite, and one that I realise has obviously influenced quite a few other games I love (especially Dragon's Dogma!) .......

Starring as an up and coming Monster Hunter with big ambitions, you start the game in a small village and obtain quests from the Village Elder, who at first tasks you with collecting meat and food for the village and learning the basics of surviving out in the field.

Soon though, some more aggressive types of monster start to appear than the the herbivores you've been chopping up for steaks, and you'll be asked to dispose of these terrors to keep the villagers safe and uneaten!

Once you've killed these monsters, you can strip them for meat, hides and bones, which you can then use as food to top up your health or as crafting materials to build better tools and weapons to make you an even better hunter! You can find other items by searching under trees, in bushes, etc. or mining rocks, catching bugs with a net or fishing. You can then combine these finds with others to create potions or other items that will also help you be better equipped to take on the larger monsters that you'll eventually be asked to hunt down!

It all makes for a very enjoyable journey through the many different areas, collecting the materials to upgrade and arm yourself so you can access even more areas and take in the sights. I said I put the game on to see how it's aged, and the answer to that is beautifully! I was pleasantly surprised to see the realistic forest settings and nice little graphical touches, such as the shadows of clouds flitting over the mountains creating a very realistic atmosphere, and streams of light shining through the gaps in the trees....

The variety of different beasts is great too, from the very dinosaur-like Apceros and Velociprey, to the very deer-like Kelbi, and the weird-but-cute Melynx, a race of cat people that surprised me by mugging me when I stumbled into a cave and proceeded to steal all my stuff! There's a cool little guy who waddles around near a big tree and takes my monster bones as trade for mushrooms too, and he reminds me of the odd creatures that populated the countless fantasy films I watched as a kid!

I've only been playing for a few hours, but already I've stumbled upon some bigger creatures too, like the Rathalos, a giant fire-breathing Wyvern who isn't very happy about me trying to steal it's eggs....and this is making me slightly concerned that maybe these creatures might be a bit too tricky to take out playing solo, and that my friend might have been right to say that the game lacks a lot by no longer being online enabled!

But, at the same time, I'm very glad that I've came back and revisited Monster Hunter, and even if I do get absolutely devastated by the Rathalos, or even a small group of Velociprey, at least I can have fun roaming around these gorgeous landscapes, roasting my meat whilst some comical music plays to tell me when it's ready to eat (or, if I stop it cooking early, ready to be used as bait!), crafting my armour and then chilling out with a bit of fishing....

It's actually a huge shame that it's taken this long for the West to wake up to Monster Hunter, and I wish I had discovered it back when I was still able to connect my PS2 online, as it would obviously have been even much more fun then....but even so, Monster Hunter on PS2 is a game still worthy of a visit, especially if like me you can't join in the fun with Monster Hunter World yet! So stick on your leather vest, arm yourself with a bone-knife and go hunt down a copy! Meanwhile I'll still be here trying to shift these bloody Wyvern eggs without breaking them.......and enjoying every controller-throwing, rage inducing minute of it!

The Backlog Of Pick-ups ( Part 1 )

Happy New Year, Stuffers! Hope you've all had a good festive season! Now that I've munched my way through the chocolate and drunk all the wine, it seems a good time to get back to the blog and get writing again....

The first thing I need to do though is get through a few post showing off my random pick-ups and Christmas gifts and things that I've accumulated since the last pick-ups post! And there are a lot. A big lot......

So let's not waste any more time and get on with showing you guys the things wot I have got!

First up is this weird Super Mario comic I picked up in a charity shop for a pound!

It's a bit tonally weird, with some nasty guy who thinks all beggars should be shot and delights in killing Mario off in Gameboy Super Mario Land acting as a conduit for the evil baddie Tatanga (again from Super Mario Land) to travel to our dimension and take over the world.....

Luckily two kids manage to summon Mario to our world too, and they help defeat Tatanga and save our dimension! Then there's another story where the same weak-willed numpty from the first story again brings Tatanga back, and a little girl manages to get Mario's help again and once more put a stop to Tatanga's evil plans!

It's definitely all a bit odd, but is quite a cool thing to add to my collection! There's at least another 3 books in the series from Valiant too, so I might see if I can track them down at some point....

Next, I found this Droopy book for 50p.......

It tells of Droopy's unfortunate toothache and an odd ballooning adventure that results after he tries to get rid of the offending tooth....Clearly for tiny kids, I picked it up just because I don't really have many things involving Droopy, who is one of my favourite cartoon characters.....

Some video games now, and here's one for original Xbox and one for the 360! Both cost me about £2 each....

Batman Arkham Origins is the third of the Arkham series on 360, and looks to be a lot of fun, but I'm waiting until I get through Arkham City, the 2nd game, as I still have that to finish....

Blood Wake is a boat combat game and again seems like it'll be pretty groovy, but I have so many other games to finish, it's going straight into the backlog......

Playstation type stuff next, and these four were also charity shop finds for between £2 to 50p each...

Shadow The Hedghog is a game that I would like to like, as I think he's quite a good character and the cutscenes are nice, but the game itself is just far too annoying...I can't seem to get the hang of any of the 3D Sonic games, and constantly just run into things and die...In fact, I've never really been a huge an of any of the Sonic games for similar reasons! I mean they're alright, but I've always been more of a Mario fan! I do like Sonic Spinball and the Arcade Sonic though...Oh, and Mean Bean Machine!!

Project Eden is a game I keep buying, somehow selling and then buying back again.....think I must have had it about 3 or 4 times now! It's actually really good and has a nice character swapping mechanic that allows for a lot of variety in the way you approach puzzle and play through the game! Well worth a look....

Gungriffon Blaze also on PS2 is a big stompy Mech game where you stomp around in big Mechs, but seems to be a bit speedier and action packed than a lot of other stompy big Mech games! haven't played it much yet, but it seems decent and I needed a big stompy Mech game to add to my PS2 collection......

And finally, Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX for PS1 is a game I remember playing the demo of and loving when it was released. It's essentially the same as the Tony Hawks Pro Skater games, but with BMXs instead of skateboards...and it's a load of fun!

Back to comics again, and I picked up these two Commando comics in yet another charity shop purely for the reason that they involved spooks! 75p each!

More book finds, and these two Buster Books were a pound each....here's a few choice pages to read.....

And lastly for this first part of pick-ups, is a weird gnome/wizard/green man head that my brother noticed and I picked up from yet another charity shop for about 50p.....

It has really weird looking eyes and you can stick a candle in the back for even freakier night time shenanigans! Anyway it was so weird, I had to pick it up!

So there you are, the first of probably quite a few posts....I've barely scratched the surface! The next one should be up tomorrow sometime, so I'll see you then-ish! Later Stuffers! :)

Latest Pick-ups (June 2017 - part 1)

Although I've been selling a lot of stuff on Ebay, I've also been accumulating more stuff over the last few weeks..which I shouldn't be doing really, but it's such cool stuff! And retail therapy goes a long way to keeping me relatively sane! So here's part one of my latest batch o' goodies....
First up is a book that probably goes a long way to explaining my obsessive collecting of various stuffs! Way back in the mists of time, my family got the offer of a house in the wee village where they still stay now..before the move, my dad told everybody to leave the rest of our stuff that still wasn't packed behind, and he would bring it up to the new house later...Only he didn't did he. No. He took it down to the local dump and put a match to it....hundreds of old books, toys, clothes etc....he didn't want to bring the accumulated junk with him to the new place! Cue evil music and moustache twirling.....

However, because he didn't ask us what our favourite stuff was, most of it went up in smoke...and so for years, and years my brother and I have been slowly gathering back all the stuff we lost, but also picking up a lot of extra stuff along the way!

One thing that I'd been hunting for for years, was a book I had hazy memories of. I knew it had something to do with aliens, and had some sort of evil, spiky, dark beasts in it too...And then Two Headed Boy put up a picture of it on Facebook and the memories came flooding back!

Yes, the book in question was Quest For The Gloop, by the people who brought us Meg & Mog, and it now sits happily in my collection of stuff once again after I bought it from Amazon for a few quid! This makes me incredibly happy, so thanks again to Two Headed Boy for reminding me of its existence!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this Retro Mini Games TV thing in a charity shop for £3....Hawkins Bazarr have it for sale for considerably more! It's filled with rubbishy hacks and cheap NES games, but still has quite a lot of enjoyable stuff to make it worth the money..including the amazing Police Dog Lasy!! In fact it seems to share a lot of the games available on the DreamGEAR 75 plug 'n' play...but this has 200 games!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up are a couple of Wii games....Endless Ocean & Little King's Story! Both a couple of quid each from charity shops!

Endless Ocean is a diving simulator, which is pretty handy for someone like me who can't swim! Haven't really played much so far, but it seems pretty cool and a good game to get rid of stress!

Little King's Story is a cutesy Pikmin/Animal Crossing/RealTimeStrategy/RPG mix of a game, of the sort I'll start playing and then realise 3 days have passed...should be a lot of fun! :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For £5 in Barnardo's Bookshop, I found this massive Halo Encyclopedia!

The shiny cover is a bit scratched up, but it has all 368 pages of info and backstory on all the games up to Halo Reach! Apparently there are quite a few bits of  erroneous info in here, but the wealth of stuff contained is still hugely impressive and goes to show just how much effort Bungie & 343 have put into creating a massive universe around the games...

Definitely a lot to read whilst supping my coffee!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another few games next, this time on Playstation 2....Le Mans 24 HoursStar Wars - The Clone Wars and TOCA Race Driver! These were about £1 each, again from random charity shops....

Le Mans 24 hours seems like a pretty decent racing game, but bizarrely I don't like it as much as the PS1 game of the same name..but I'll maybe get into that in a later Blog post! ;)

Star Wars - The Clone Wars I've yet to play, but looks like it'll be a fairly decent, drivey shoot-em-up!

TOCA Race Driver is a great racing game, slightly ruined by the fact that Codemasters tried to spice things up a bit by adding a story mode....sort of like what EA are doing with FIFA nowadays! This was a bit of a failed attempt though, and they got rid of the idea again in later TOCA titles...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the bookshops I frequent in Edinburgh has a large selection of Cheeky comics that nobody else seems to want, so I keep picking up a few for £1 each whenever I'm in town...

I actually have more fun finding old adverts for stuff or the random old stories to the normal Cheeky stuff...which I still enjoy, but I try to look for issues with the most interesting or odd things inside!

Like this 'Spotter Book', where the basically just give pictures of things you'll find around town with a box to go and tick them off when you see them! Kids must have been really bored in the late '70s, eh!?

Or this Reg Varney As A Boy oddity from 1955! And what a boy! He was apparently chasing the ladies before he ever got near the buses!

And I remember these Corona Fizzical badges, so they must have hung around for a few years as I was only 1 year old in 1978...

(Here's a TV Ad from 1976 with the same campaign........)

And lastly, an amazing Trebor ad starring the dynamic duo of Batman & Robin

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And to finish off part one, here's an Xbox 360 Wireless Mic that I found for £3 in the same charity shop as the TV Game thing! I never usually find stuff in there, but it seems to be upping it's game for..well, games stuff! Now I can finally sing my heart out in my Guitar Hero games....yay!!

Anyway, like I said, that'll do for now! Expect the part two of the pick-up post in a day or two..or three....Laters! :-)
